In loving memory ~
"Hey, did you hear the one about the rooster and the camel that went into the bar...." If you had the opportunity to know Doug you knew he had a great sense of humour, a keen wit, and an insatiable appetite to keep abreast of current affairs. He will be sorely missed by his immediate family and many friends. Doug grew up on 5th street in Nelson with his brothers Larry (Veronica), Rob (Cindy), and Ken (Michelle) as well as a cast of hooligans in the neighborhood, all of whom remained good friends throughout Doug's life. Doug loved sports, particularly baseball, fishing, and skiing, all of which he shared with his family and friends. Another past time he was very skilled at was stained glass art; many of his works are prominently displayed in houses throughout the Kootenays and beyond.
He did not suffer fools but when you were a friend you knew he would do anything for you with no expectations in return. In later years family became more important. His two sons, David and Kelly were a particular source of pride and later his grand kids. Brooke and Erik (Joscelyn) were at Doug's side during his last days, and the love was very palpable. His daughter in law Carla has been an always reliable source of support to Doug and continues to provide a cheerful, practical, and loving inspiration to all those impacted by his passing.
Table 17 at Mike's Place was Doug's favourite place to socialize and he developed many long term friendships, particularly with staff. They treated him with respect, looked forward to his stories, some of which were actually true! And above all, his sense of humour and quick wit was welcomed and shared by what he would often refer to as his "Hume Girls".
Doug was with the Nelson Fire Department for over thirty years starting as a volunteer in 1971 and achieving full time status in 1974. He was inspirational to others and mentored many colleagues throughout the years receiving awards from the Municipal, Provincial, and Federal levels of Government. With the support of his employer and union he promoted workplace safety as well as local charities.
The fish in Kootenay Lake may think they are now safe from Doug's wiley ways, but I wouldn't be too sure.... What I am sure of is Doug will be sorely missed by family and friends; goodbye Doug but see you soon.
For those wishing to remember Doug in a practical and important way, he would appreciate donations being made to the B.C. Professional Firefighters Burn Fund in his memory. Extreme gratitude to all KLDH staff in emergency, oncology and 3rd floor.
