'It is good to have an end to journey towards, But it is the journey that matters in the end'.
And so it was....
Mike was born in Lancashire, England. An educated man and gifted athlete, he attended Clitheroe Royal Grammar School, and then Edinburgh University where he received his MD in 1962.
A superb cross-country runner, he won the 'Blues' and was immensely proud of this achievement with the 'Hare and Hounds' of Edinburgh University. Mike practiced medicine in Scotland and England before the great outdoors and beauty of British Columbia lured him to Canada and Nelson became home.
With tremendous zest and ability, he was soon a member of skiing, hiking and tennis groups, and forged lasting friendships. Mike was a compassionate and caring physician which his many 'delivered babies' will surely remember.
He was surrounded by a loving family and was a wonderful 'Opi'. A great raconteur, he would entertain the grandchildren with fabulous tales of pot holing in the Dales and other humorous anecdotes. They enjoyed his spirit of fun, enthusiasm and kindness.
I will forever miss my friend, companion and loving husband. It is hard to imagine life without him, but deeply grateful for the time we shared.
'When the golden sun is setting, And your mind from care is free, And of others you are thinking, Will you sometimes think of me.'
A celebration of Mike's life will be held in Nelson at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Diabetes Foundation would be appreciated.
