Gwen (age 92) was born in Slocan City and moved to Nelson soon after. After graduating from high school, she attended Royal Jubilee Hospital School of Nursing in Victoria, graduating with honours in 1950. She returned to Nelson and began her nursing career at the Nelson Hospital. In 1952 she met and married Rick Barber from Trail. They had two daughters.
Gwen played piano her entire life. She was an accomplished seamstress and knitter. After retiring from nursing in 1978 she continued to volunteer with the cancer society. She enjoyed her retirement activities including golf, oil painting, bowling and cross-country skiing.
She was predeceased by her parents and her husband Rick. She is survived by her daughters Jonni (David) and Lynne (Peter), four grandchildren- Michael, Chris (Christy), Lindsay (Tighe) and Jared, seven great grandchildren, Bradley, Karen, Charlie, Alice, Max, Makenna and Sam and one great great grandson, Greyson.
By request, there will be no funeral. Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or Heart & Stroke Foundation.
The family would like to thank Anne Corbett, Mary MacDonald, Louise O'Neill, Doctors Cusak and Mieske and staff of Lakeview Village.
