Frances 'Fanny' Kabatoff (née Chernenkoff)

January 5, 1936 - October 9, 2022
We are sad to announce the passing of Frances (Fanny) Kabatoff (née Chernenkoff) on October 9, 2022, at East Kootenay Regional Hospital in Cranbrook, with her husband of 66 years Peter and daughter Marian by her side.
Frances leaves behind her husband Peter, children Gordon (Catherine), Marian (Hal) and Alan (Lisa), granddaughter Bianca, great granddaughter Aiva, sister Verna and extended family and friends.
She was predeceased by her parents, Mary and Peter, brothers Phillip, Peter and Andrew, and granddaughter Oksana.
Born January 5, 1936, in Crescent Valley, BC, she was the second eldest of 5 children born to Pete and Mary Chernenkoff. She married Peter Kabatoff of WInlaw on January 28th, 1956, and they moved to the Slocan Valley where they built their first two homes with wood milled and planed from the Kabatoff family's Lemon Creek Sawmill.
Frances & Peter raised their three children on the family acreage, which was home to a huge garden, cows and chickens. Mom loved canning and baking, while Dad tended the garden, and they sold extra milk, cottage cheese, butter and eggs.
Frances always was an independent woman for the time - she drove and began work as a cook at GraceAnna's restaurant in Crescent Valley while the kids were still young. Mom loved helping people so she got her Home Support Certificate from Selkirk College in Castlegar and worked part time for many years in the Slocan Valley providing home support care for the elderly.
Mom loved to cook and made the best pies and borscht! She also loved knitting and crocheting, making many doilies, afghans, and baby clothes which she gave as gifts as well as making wool blankets and sweaters. She even golfed at Valleyview Golf Course for a few years!
When Peter retired from Slocan Forest Products, they built a home in Lower Bonnington where they lived for over twenty years. They moved to Nelson for a few years where they enjoyed walks along the lake and hanging out at A&W in the mall.
Health issues had them moving to Cranbrook in the past year to be with their daughter Marian. Frances was so proud of her children and their accomplishments and loved when they visited. Her family will miss her independent spirit, sense of silliness and humour, hard work ethic, kind and generous heart, and beautiful smile. Resting in peace with the Lord.
Service to be held at Thompson Funeral Service in Nelson, on October 21 at 10 am with interment at Perry Siding Cemetery to follow.
