It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Helen Georgina (Duane) Stefiuk nee Bourgeois, at Mountain Lakes Senior Community on May 23, 2023, at the age of 83 after a long and courageous battle with Dementia.
Duane was born October 11, 1939, to Yvonne and Bruno Bourgeois in Nelson, BC. She attended St. Joseph's Catholic School through graduation then to Notre Dame University for her grade 13. She took classes in business administration in Trail, BC. Upon completion, went to work for the Nelson Daily News and then for the Department of Highways as receptionist to the Regional Manager.
Years later, she met her husband Boris (Bo) Stefiuk who also was working for the Ministry of Highways. Married in Nelson December 1966, they moved to Castlegar, BC, and started a family. In 1969, she and the family moved back to Nelson to raise 4 boys and support her mother in the care of her older brother Bruno.
Once the boys were in school, she learned word processing on the computer in 1982. She worked for the Cathedral of Mary Immaculate as secretary to 4 different Bishops before retiring and enjoying life with Bo and her grandchildren. Duane, through her generosity and kindness, to all people exhibited the true meaning of religion.
Duane enjoyed gardening, crocheting, paper tole, bridge night with the ladies, curling, preparing wonderful meals, and decorating amazing cakes for raffles and family. She was a member of the sorority Beta Sigma Phi where she made many lifelong connections. She loved her cruises, with Bo and good friends, to the south seas along with trips to Maui.
Duane leaves behind her husband and true love Boris along with sons, spouses and grandchildren. Byron & Ellen (Jacob and Denise), Michael & Marcie (Natalie, Faith, and Olivia), Christopher & Melanie and Derek & Anna (Milla Pearl and Evangeline).
She is predeceased by her parents Yvonne and Bruno Bourgeois, brother Bruno and granddaughter Pavla.
We would like to thank Dr, Andrew Murray (retired), Dr. Janz, the staff and Life Enrichment Dept., at Mountain Lake Seniors Community for their care and commitment to her.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday September 9th at 11:00 am at the Cathedral of Mary Immaculate, 813 Ward St, Nelson, BC, with interment and refreshments to follow.
