A remarkably kind and loving soul has left the world behind. Helen (Ilana) Leslie Pengelly was a loving and devoted wife, mother, sister, and friend. She was a talented artist and a patient teacher. After a long struggle with cancer, she passed peacefully surrounded by her family and closest friends. The end came not as a burden, but as a deliverance which freed her spirit from her physical constraints. Helen was a Calgarian born and bred. As a child, she studied dance for many years, a path she would later pursue at York University in Toronto. It was there that she met her husband John. The two were engaged within weeks, and were later married in Calgary; a romance which would last for over 27 years. In 1990 they moved to Nelson BC and started a family of their own. She became deeply involved with both the local Jewish and Waldorf communities. Helen was a woman of true artistic passion. She dabbled in many different mediums until she discovered her true talent with the art of felting. Helen greatly enjoyed her role as a felting teacher. The artwork which she was most proud of, was the collaborative pieces created in her many classes and workshops. To the amazement of all, after 53 years of hating the colder months, she developed another obsession, that of snowboarding and all things winter. Helen is predeceased by her parents Victor Mintz and Fay Mintz (2012). She leaves behind her loving husband John Pengelly, her sons Callum Pengelly and Ryan Pengelly, her sister Brenda Mintz, as well as her former husband Dale Corbett (and her much beloved cat Freya). Her family wishes to thank all of the wonderful and supportive doctors, nurses, home-care workers, masseuses, and caring friends who helped make her last few years as comfortable as possible. A celebration of life will be held on July 16, 2:00 pm at The Front Room in Nelson. Shalom. Arrangements are under the direction of Thompson Funeral
