In Loving Memory ~
It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of Ian Lloyd Galbraith on Monday, October 14th, 2024. Ian was born in Nanaimo BC on April 7th, 1951 and in 1953 he moved with his parents to Nelson BC, settling on Nelson's North Shore. He graduated from L.V. Rogers Secondary School and then Nelson's Notre Dame University (NDU) with a BA in History.
Throughout his early years he was active in many pursuits, including scouting (achieving Queen Scout level), choir, playing in a local band, and water skiing. He was the driving force in the early 1970's in establishing the Nelson Aqua (Water) Ski Club which created a beehive of activity on Nasookin bay with slalom, ski jumping and trick skiing practices and competitions.
He also had a passion for theatre in the local community and at NDU where he acted, built sets, and designed and managed the lighting for many productions. Ian was deeply involved in the University community, organizing annual car rallies and volunteering for many on campus events.
It was while at University that Ian met the love of his life, Cindy and she finally agreed to marry him in December 1975. They moved to Calgary to continue their education; however Ian's career path eventually landed him in the banking sector where he remained until his retirement. Ian loved animals, particularly their latest dog Gremlin that they adopted from a rescue shelter.
Throughout his life Ian was a dedicated individual focused on making the world a better place, from his involvement in scouting as a leader and then as Deputy Regional Commissioner in Calgary East region, to his open readiness to help anyone in need.
After moving to the Springbank area in 1998, he become involved with many Springbank community groups, including the Heritage Club, the Springbank Community Association where he served as the CFO for the last 10 years, and he served on several volunteer boards within Rocky View County. Ian joined the Springbank United Church to sing in the choir which lead to the development of the fund-raising Barnwood Operation which kept him busy these past few years. He recruited many courageous volunteers who helped salvage the weathered wood for repurposing which provided needed funds to support the maintenance of the church.
Ian is survived by his wife Cindy, brother Eric Galbraith and sister Valerie (Donald) Miller along with several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, H. Lloyd Galbraith in 1980 and his mother, V. Patricia E. Galbraith in 2004.
Ian's celebration of life was held on Saturday October 26, 2024 at the Springbank United Church, and was officiated by The Reverend Dr. Steven Harper. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please make a donation to either the Heart & Stoke Foundation or your favourite Animal Rescue Society.
Ian cared deeply for the people around him and was a kind and compassionate soul.
He made an impact on many lives and will be forever missed. Until we meet again...
