November 30, 1934 - September 22, 2024
In loving memory ~
It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Iris Elizabeth Benger (née Keep) on September 22, after suffering a stroke the week prior.
Born on November 30, 1934, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Iris lived a life full of love, adventure, and deep connections with family and friends.
In 1956, she married the love of her life, Edward Benger, and together they built a beautiful life, raising their three children: Jim, Brenda, and Bruce. In July 1966, the Benger family relocated to Nelson, BC, where Iris spent many years working at Mount Saint Francis Hospital, before retiring in 1991.
Iris was involved in many community organizations and outdoor activities such as golfing, curling, and skiing at Whitewater. Friendship was central to Iris and Ed's life, spending much time with their friends in Nelson that they made over the course of 60 years. Ed and Iris made sure to create cherished memories by gathering their four grandchildren—Kim, Lindsay, Jen, and Mitchel—at their camp on Kootenay Lake every summer.
After retirement, Iris and Ed found joy in the warmth of Yuma, Arizona, where they spent winters playing shuffleboard and volunteering within their community. In Nelson, Iris volunteered throughout the community and continued to embrace an active lifestyle, enjoying long walks at Lakeside Park, chair yoga, and games of cribbage at the Seniors' Centre.
Iris was predeceased by her beloved husband Ed, her daughter Brenda, and all of her siblings. She is survived by her sons Jim (Georgia) of Gibsons, and Bruce (Karen) of Victoria, her sister-in-laws Diane and Marlene Keep, her four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
The family would like to extend their deepest thanks to Dr. Collins and the compassionate staff at Mountain Lake Seniors Centre for their care and kindness during Iris's later years. A special thank you also goes to Joan McKen and the entire McKen family for their unwavering friendship and support over the decades. Iris' wishes were cremation and no service.
