Joan Lefeaux passed away on February 1, 2011 at Hawthorn Manor in Kelowna. As a young adult she was an award-winning athlete in both track and field and Pro Rec (gymnastics). Joan and Laurie met and were married over 68 years ago. Their first home was in southeastern Alberta where Laurie was a flight instructor during the war. They moved to Nelson in 1944 and lived there for almost 50 years. During her life Joan was committed to helping others. For years she taught a lady’s Keep Fit class at the Nelson Civic Centre and in school gymnasiums in the city. As a Girl Guide leader Joan made a positive impact on the lives of many young girls in the city. She was the major force in establishing the Volunteer Program at the Kootenay Lake General Hospital and followed this by sitting on the hospital Board for many years. During this time she was also appointed to the Board of the B.C. Hospital Association. She was recognized as Nelson’s Citizen of the Year for her commitment to the community. Following her move to Kelowna Joan committed many hours as a volunteer in the ICU Unit of the Kelowna General Hospital. Her love of the outdoors and extraordinary knowledge of birds and flowers has been passed on to her daughters. She will be sadly missed by her husband, Laurie, daughters Joyce (Bob) Algar and Nancy, grandchildren, Maureen (Paul ) Durant and Michael Algar, and great granddaughter, Allison Wheeler. She was predeceased by her son, Glen. Joan’s wishes to be cremated and not have a funeral have been honored.
