Sep 06 1924 – Aug 4 2016

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Laura Richardson (nee Thacker) . She died peacefully at Castleview Care Centre in Castlegar B.C. surrounded by family.

Laura was the older of two children born to Thomas and Cassie Thacker in Ochre River Manitoba. She was predeceased by her parents and younger brother John. Laura is survived by her loving husband Rud (John) of 68 years and her daughter Karen (Bruce Walgren) and grandchildren Lauren and Ian of Nelson, B.C.

Laura attended school in the rural area of Ochre River Manitoba during the 1930’s and became a teacher at the age of 16. She continued her education throughout her career and she became qualified to teach in over 5 different provinces. In 1975 she obtained a Bachelors Degree in Education while working full time. She taught elementary school until 1984 when she retired. In July 1948, she married Rud, her childhood sweetheart in Borden Ontario. As Rud was in the Canadian Laura moved 16 times across Canada and once to France. During these moves she always seemed to walk into a teaching job and often would be left behind as Rud moved to a new station and she would have to finish the school year, pack up the household and follow hi down the road. This made for many laughs and jokes over the years. In 1984 she and Rud retired in Comox, B.C. and she resided there until the end of July 2016 when she moved into care in Castlegar to be closer to her family.

Laura was a very knowledgeable individual and took great pride in her family. She enjoyed sewing, baking and reading. She loved family gatherings, visit with long time friends and watching children whether they were playing hockey on the street or playing just over the fence.

The family would like to thank Dr. Reggler of St. Josephs General Hospital in Comox and Dr. Lisa Vasil of Castleview for their comfort and care of Laura.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the B.C. Cancer Foundation.

A celebration of Laura’s life will be held at a later date at the Comox United Church in Comox B.C.
