In loving memory ~
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Margaret "Mitzi" Jane Hufty, who left us peacefully on May 2, 2025, in her hometown of Nelson, British Columbia.
Born on November 17, 1938, in Nelson as Margaret Jane Dawney, Mitzi spent her early years in the scenic Slocan Valley before returning to Nelson, the place she always called home. She was proud to be a member of the first graduating class of L.V. Rogers Secondary, a milestone she often recalled with pride.
Mitzi was predeceased by her mother and stepfather, Molly and Charles Hufty; her father, Bill Dawney; her sons Stephen, Michael, and Darrel Propp; her granddaughter Jodi Chmilar; and her great-grandson Chevy Bond.
She is lovingly remembered by her son Kevin Dawney, granddaughter Carly Dawney and her partner Brian Bond, great-grandson Ryan Chmilar, brother Mike Hufty, sisters Gay Black, Holly (Mike) Colebank, and Moira (John) Wainright, along with many cherished nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.
Mitzi had a true passion for people and a special fondness for her community. She loved strolling down Baker Street, always greeting familiar faces with warmth and kindness. Her eclectic spirit and deep appreciation for the unique character of Nelson shone through in every conversation, especially when sharing stories about the town's rich history. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, whose strength, humor, and compassion touched many lives.
In keeping with her wishes, no service will be held at this time. Mitzi's memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. For more information and to leave a message of condolence, please see the Thompson Funeral Service website at https://www.thompsonfs.ca
