January 8, 2019
Marjorie Joyce Zubick (Riley) passed away peacefully at Mountain Lake on January 8, 2019, at the age of 93.

Joyce was born in 1925 in Kinnaird BC, and raised along with her older brother Bill on a ranch in Blewett by William and Rachel Riley. She spent her days playing outdoors with her dog Spot, swimming at Taghum Beach, skating on the pond, and walking or bicycling to town for her piano lessons.

After high school, she attended business college and went to work for North American Life and later for the City of Nelson.

In October 1944, Joyce married George Roland "Ron" Zubick in a simple ceremony as it was war time and Ron was in the Navy. They had known each other since childhood. After the war, they stayed in Nelson and had 3 daughters, Louise, Carol, and Joan. Joyce went back to work at Kootenay Forest Products when the girls were older, until daughter number 4, Anne, was on the way. Joyce returned to work with the Conservation Officer Service in 1975, retiring in 1988.

Joyce was active for many years in the United Church Ladies, Shrine Ladies, Daughters of the Nile, Eastern Star, Job's Daughters, and the Royal Canadian Legion. She and her husband travelled to many events together.

Joyce enjoyed spending time with her family, and many happy times were spent together at their summer place in Proctor. She enjoyed camping, fishing, golf, and travelling, with trips throughout North America, as well as to Hawaii, England, Wales, and Scotland. She particularly enjoyed road trips of all kinds immensely. When the grandchildren came along, she loved them wholeheartedly and was proud and pleased to be with her family as much as possible. She was a gracious and loving mother and grandmother.

Joyce is survived by her daughters Louise (Bernie) Swendson, Carol Zubick (Wayne Vienneau), Anne (Doug) Cavicchi, all of Nelson B.C., as well as grandchildren Michael Joyce (Courtney Shrieves), Craig Swendson, Robyn Joyce (Chris Trudeau), Alex Haggstrom, Eric Haggstrom, and Ryan Cavicchi, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Ron in 1994, daughter Joan Haggstrom in 2009, her parents William and Rachel, and her brothers Alex Watson and Bill Riley.

A service was held at the United Church in Nelson on Wednesday, January 16, followed by interment at the Nelson Cemetery. Donations may be made to the United Church in Nelson, or to the Alzheimer's Society of Canada.

Thank you to all those friends and family who loved and supported Joyce throughout her life. Also, thanks to Dr. McIntyre for many years of care, and to Dr. Janz and all the staff at Mountain Lake for the care and kindness shown to Joyce in her last years.
