It is with sadness that we mourn the passing, in her 94th year, of Mary Evelyn Green, Evelyn was the last of the Riondel "old-timers", the families that were transferred to Riondel in the late 1940's to populate the town and work the Bluebell Mine.
Evelyn was forever in her garden, which she developed from scratch, to the beautiful display it is today. Flowers of all kinds were prolific and anyone leaving after a visit was gifted with a bouquet, and vegetables as well.
The Most Holy Redeemer Church, of which she was a lifelong member, was a weekly recipient of seasonal flowers. She was an active member of the Catholic Women's League, taught catechism for many years, and kept the church lawn mowed and flower beds groomed.
Evelyn was a generous and loving mother, grandmother and great- grandmother. She was predeceased by her husband, Earl, in 1981 and her father George Ullian in 1969.
Evelyn lost her own mother at a very early age. She was just 2 1/2 years old when Frances Fortuna-Ullian died in childbirth in 1927. Her baby brother Francis, passed in 2004 (age 77), her sisters: Margaret, passed in 2017 (age 93) and Bertha, in 2018 (age 94).
She is survived by her four children: James, Connie, Fred (Sherlynne) and Richard (Karen), grandchildren: Kris (Melanie) Kirkham, Kelli Kirkham, K'Arlee (Darren) O'Neill, Dane Morison, Nick (Laura) Green, Crystal (Gary) Janzen and April Green. She was blessed with three great-grandchildren: Jack, Saoirse and Hannah.
Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, April 13 at 11:00 am at the Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Riondel with reception to follow at the Seniors Centre. Interment will be in Nelson Cemetery on Monday April 15 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or charity of your choice would be appreciated.
