Mary Landis

MARY LANDIS. Long time resident of Salmo, Mary Landis passed away on Saturday, April 10th, 2010 at St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver. Mary was born October 27th, 1929 to Laura and Sam Swetlishoff. She was the youngest of six children. She married Alfred "Tim" Landis on February 12th, 1949. They farmed at Pass Creek for several years then moved to Salmo in 1956 where Tim was employed by the Emerald Mine. Over the years Mary was a member of the Salmo Doukhbor Society and Legion Ladies Auxilliary, Branch #217. Mary was an avid gardener, homemaker, huckleberry picker, and she also enjoyed knitting and crocheting. She had a beautiful smile and all who knew her loved her. Mary is survived by her daughters Marie, Eileen and added daughter Joy, son Albert, granddaugther Stefanie and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Tim in 1998, daughter-in-law Nancy in 2009, all of her siblings, their spouses and her parents. Service took place April 16th at the Castlegar Funeral Chapel, with burial at the Salmo Cemetery. A celebration of life gathering was held at the Salmo Legion Hall where all enjoyed a luncheon supplied by the Legion Ladies Auxilliary. Family wishes to thank, Nick Burt, for all his help, all who sent flowers, food and cards; the Legion Auxiliary memebers who provided lunch; Colin and Jack who played her favourite songs; Castlegar Funeral Chapel -Bill Strilaeff, officiating; Sid Malakoff as MC; as well as the singers who sang hymns at the service in Castlegar, we also wish to thank all others who helped in their special way and the pallbearers who graciously carried Mary to her resting place. All who knew her will sadly miss her.
