November 16, 1923 – October 12, 2019
Patricia Edith Hickey, 95, of Nelson BC, passed away at Kootenay Lake Hospital, October 12, 2019, of natural causes. She was born to Benjamin and Edith Gray on November 16th, 1923 in Kamloops BC. Several moves occurred, as her father worked for CPR. When it came time for the family to move from Victoria to Edmonton, mom told her father “Only if I can get a horse”, which she did. She inherited her love of horses from him, and this love continued through her life, encompassing many other animals as well.
When her dad passed away “Patsy” was only 17, leaving her mom to raise two daughters on her own, whereupon the family moved to Vancouver to be closer to family. Mom was very proud of her service in the Canadian Women’s Army Corps as drill sergeant from 1943 until her discharge in 1946. Once discharged she moved back to Vancouver, where she was employed by Woodward’s Department Store. One of the employees, was to be her future sister-in-law Lil Hickey, who introduced mom to her future husband Roy. In 1952 after getting married, mom and dad moved to Nelson where she lived until the end.
Pat lived her life as her ‘authentic self’ and will be greatly missed by all her family and close friends; her daughter Marlene (Randy) Gates, son Darren (Lynda) Hickey, grandchildren Sarah (John) Tweddle, Robyn (Jason) Stevenson, Kyla (Jason) Strongman, and Colleen Hickey; step grandchildren Laurie, Stacey, Emily and Max; 13 great grandchildren; sister-in-law Yvonne Hickey; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Patsy was pre-deceased by her parents, husband Roy, son Daniel, and her sister Viola Baker.
The family sincerely wishes to thank the Dr.’s, and especially the nurses and care aids at Kootenay Lake Hospital for the dedicated care given to mom in her last weeks.
A celebration of her life will be held in the spring of 2020 and in lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donation to be made in Pat’s name to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of BC/Yukon.
