Robert Arthur "Art" Waldie

December 22, 2017

Dec 22, 2017
Robert Arthur "Art" Waldie passed away on December 22, 2017 at Mountain Lakes Seniors Community after a lengthy illness.  He was 94 years of age.

Art was born in Trail, BC, second of 8 children. He began playing the bagpipes at an early age and went on to join the Canadian Scottish Regiment as a piper.  He graduated from the University of British Columbia and went on to pursue a lengthy career in forestry, first for the Federal and later the Provincial Government.  By the time he retired in 1982, Art was in charge of Silviculture for the Nelson Forest District.

Art was a well-known wood carver, a hobby he pursued from age 5 until his late 70's when his carpal tunnel prevented him from continuing.  He was highly prolific with his artistry.  His graceful and whimsical animal sculptures, his extensively researched and meticulously executed heraldy and his bas relief panels which employ impressive perspective were sought after and commissioned for many years.  Art's most recognizable work is the "Welcome to Nelson" signs that greet all who enter Nelson which he spent many volunteer hours painstakingly creating.

Art's creativity and community spirit came together in other ways.  He was a West Mosby Volunteer, a loosely organized collective of creative folks who played bagpipers and build cannons, catapults and Viking ships to enhance many parades and celebrations but most importantly to have a good time.

Giving back to his community was a fundamental value for Art.  He was endlessly supportive of people and willing to see the best in anyone, always ready to offer encouragement.  On a larger scale, Art was a highly active member of the Anglican church for many years and served for a time on the board of the Memorial Society of BC.

Art was happily married to Virginia "Ginny" Waldie (Bromley) for over 30 years until she passed away in 1986.  They had two sons, Randy and Garry.  He married Nancy Matlock in 1989 and welcomed her children, Wendy and Tim into a new expanded family. Nancy passed away in 2014.  Art is survived by his 4 children and 11 grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on March 10th, 2018 at 2 pm at Thompson Funeral Home in Nelson, BC.  In lieu of flowers please donate to a charity of your choice.
