Robert Edward Gordon Oliver (Bob) passed away peacefully at the age of 96 on November 4, 2023, at Mt. Lake Senior's Community in Nelson, BC. Bob was born on August 18, 1927, in Nelson to William and Grace Oliver. Bob spent his early years on a farm in Shoreacres and then moved to South Slocan with his family to care for his grandparents; this is where he would spend the rest of his life. As a young boy, Bob spent most of his time outdoors and in nature, thus nurturing his love and passion for all animals, especially horses. This is where his love for everything outdoors arose: fishing, hunting, farming, gardening, and exploring.
Bob worked for West Kootenay Power in South Slocan for 39 years, most of those years as the meter reader. Along with his full-time job Bob also operated his own business, a garbage disposal service, which he worked every Saturday. He was well known throughout the Slocan valley and beyond. He was a kind soul who would initiate a conversation with everyone and anyone; he had all the time in the world for people. It was at West Kootenay Power that Bob met the absolute love of his life, Marilyn Edith Catherine Horrey, the pretty young lady in the office. It was not long afterwards that they married on December 12, 1959, and made their life in South Slocan raising a family of five children.
Bob was a dedicated family man and a pillar of strength. Bob is predeceased by his loving wife of 61 years, Marilyn Oliver (January 22, 2021) and his loving sister, Beatrice Mills (March 15, 2015). He is survived by his five children: Warren Oliver, Catherine (Dan) Crowther, Sharon (Andrew) Pearman, Gordon (Colette) Oliver, and Tamara (Shane) Martin. He is also survived by his five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to all who have offered their condolences during this difficult time. Thank you to the staff at Mt. Lake Senior's Community who cared for him unconditionally in his short time there. Thank you to the Thompson Funeral Home whose compassion, professionalism, and service are so deeply appreciated. The family will have a private gathering to celebrate the lives of Bob & Marilyn in the spring of 2024 along with the burial of their ashes at the Nelson cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family would kindly request donations be made to a charity of your choice in Bob's name.
