April 2, 1939 - April 16, 2022
In loving memory ~
Romao Nunes Valente of Nelson, BC, age 83, passed away peacefully in his sleep, Saturday, April 16, 2022, at the Kootenay Lake Hospital, surrounded by loved ones.
Born on April 2, 1939, in the Algarve of Portugal, he moved to Nelson, BC with his wife Filomena in 1968.
Survived by his wife Filomena, son Heldar (Christy), son Kevin (Shannon) and four grandsons, Cooper, Ty, Miles and Jace. Predeceased by his parents Jose and Ana and brother Manuel.
Romao served in the Portuguese army from 1959-1961. Once married in 1965, he and his wife moved to Paris, France for several years before coming to Canada.
Known for his work ethic, he worked in the forest industry for 30+ years. Early in his career he could be spotted walking to and from KFP every day.
Once retired he enjoyed fishing, making bread, cheering on the Nelson Maple Leafs, cutting and gathering firewood, gardening, playing with his grandkids, and walking all around town. He also spent many days under his walnut tree or on the deck peeling walnuts that would always turn his hands black from the sap, but he said he liked that as it always reminded him of his father who did the same thing back in Portugal.
People would often ask him how he had an apple tree with both red and yellow apples, which he would happily tell them how he grafted it himself, only after telling them it just grew that way.
Prayers service and visitation will be held Thursday, April 21, 2022 at 7:00 pm at the Cathedral of Mary Immaculate Catholic Church in Nelson, followed by a funeral mass on Friday April 22, 2022 at 10:30 am. Burial service to follow at the Nelson Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Canadian Diabetes Foundation.
