Shirley died peacefully at home on March 2, 2024, at the age of 87.
She was predeceased by Robert, her beloved husband of nearly 60 years. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters: Susan, Sara, Annie (Steve), and Lori, and her two grandchildren, Morgan and Hayden.
Born in Blanchard, Oklahoma to Leonard and Sue Price, Shirley was the eldest sister to Tijuana and Doris. She moved to Tulare, California with her family in 1942, and after graduating from high school, moved to San Francisco where she worked and went to university.
She meet a handsome navy man named Robert Kammerzell and when he finished his tour, they married in 1959. With a VW bug full of homesteading dreams and three young daughters, they moved to South Slocan, BC, and began farming and homeschooling the girls.
Daughter number four arrived in 1972. For the next twenty years, Shirley worked at KLDH where she made many lifelong friendships.
In retirement, she enjoyed gardening, and she also travelled with Robert to England many times to search out their genealogical roots. She visited Greece with two of her daughters, and many bucket list places in North America, her favourite being the Oregon Coast.
Shirley loved having her two grandchildren close by, and appreciated being able to watch them grow into beautiful adults. She felt blessed by all those whose lives touched hers over the years.
Shirley wished to express her gratefulness to Dr. Brandon Tuvel, Meika, Drs. Galbraith and Newson, and the entire team of home-care health professionals for their kind and supportive care. At her request, there will not be a funeral service.
In lieu of flowers, kindly donate to Kootenay Lake Hospital Foundation. Shirley and Robert will be laid to rest together at Balfour Cemetery.
She will be greatly missed by her girls, her son-in-law and her grandchildren for her kindness, generosity of spirit, and thoughtfulness.
