February 1, 2010

SHIRLEY ISABELL DEWAR August 8, 1918 - February 1, 2010 We are deeply saddened by the recent loss of a truly wonderful mother, grandmother and great grandmother, one whose life enriched not only those of her family but all of those who knew her. We are all so grateful for time spent with her, sharing in her laughter, memories and tears. Her inner strength, caring and sharing was such that it was a wonder to us all. We will miss her in our lives. Shirley was born in Forgan SK to J. Harry and Margaret Coakwell and was raised on the family farm. After finishing school she moved to Red Deer AB where she met John C. (Jim) Dewar and they were later married in Edmonton AB on June 3, 1939. They resided in Calgary & Edmonton before moving to Nelson in 1952 along with three children and shorty after a fourth child was born in Nelson. Shirley was active in the Nelson United Church and belonged to the 56th Unit and for many years enjoyed the fellowship of the United Church Couples Club. She was a dedicated volunteer at the I.O.D.E. Thrift Shop, Mount St. Frances Bingo every Wednesday for many years and until recently was helping with Bingo at Mountain Lakes Seniors Community. Over the years she also helped deliver Meals on Wheels, spent time at Sr.'s Branch 51 and Broader Horizons. She was very active well into her 87th year. Shirley was predeceased by her husband Jim, and other loving family members. Left to cherish her memories are her daughters Donna and Lynda, son Gordon (Pam), grandchildren Brant (Karen), Garth and Kevin (Janna), great-grandchildren MacKenzie, Tayten and Dax, brothers Floyd, Stewart (June), sister in-laws Alice Cutler (Earle), Jean Coakwell and many nieces & nephews. A private Graveside Service will be held at a later date. Donations in Shirley's memory may be made to the CT Scanner, c/o Kootenay Lake Hospital Foundation, 3 View St., Nelson BC, V1L 2V1
