September 4, 1932 - February 24, 2025
In loving memory ~
Sister Dorothy Bob, SSA (Sister Mary Juan Diego), member of the Xaxli'p Band, was born September 4, 1932, on the Fountain Reserve, Lillooet, BC and baptized at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Fountain. Dorothy died peacefully on February 24, 2025 at the Royal Jubilee Hospital, Victoria, BC.
Dorothy was the fifth of eight children born to Christopher and Cordelia (Patrick) Bob. Having left school early to care for her mother who was very ill, Dorothy subsequently worked as a cook at Kamloops Indian Residential School and while there decided to become a Sister of St. Ann. Entering the Congregation in Victoria, BC on August 4, 1958, Dorothy pronounced her vows on August 6, 1960. Her ministry initially encompassed cooking and sewing but her desire to work with students in the Residential Schools led her to Lower Post and Kuper Island Residential Schools as a child-care worker, having obtained a child-care qualification from Camosun College.
As the Residential Schools were in the process of closing, Dorothy transitioned to pastoral care and First Nations Christian leadership, first in Lillooet, then following studies at Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA, in Williams Lake and West Bank. Dorothy also served five years as president of the Amerindian Conference of Western Canada. Following a sabbatical at Galilee Centre in Ontario where she pursued courses in Indigenous Spirituality, Archbishop Adam Exner, OMI, hired Dorothy to work with and train First Nations spiritual lay leaders at the Kateri Native Centre in Vancouver. In 2000, Dorothy returned to Victoria to minister at Queenswood Centre where she shared her knowledge of the Medicine Wheel spiritual discernment process with retreatants and community groups. In retirement she lived at Mount St. Angela, St. Ann's Residence and the Cridge Centre for the Family, embracing her mission of prayer, presence and wisdom-sharing.
Predeceased by her parents, Christopher and Cordelia Bob; sisters: Henrietta, Vera and Shirley; brothers: Frederick, Bernard, Anthony and Daniel. Survived by her cousins: Debbie (Cecil) Mitchell, Freda Terry and many more cousins, nieces and nephews, including eldest nephew Xaxli'p Band Chief Darrel Bob; many friends and her own community of Sisters of St. Ann. We want to thank the Medical Team at the Royal Jubilee Hospital, especially Dr. Brabant and all the nurses who provided Dorothy with excellent care.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 7, 2025 at 10:30 am at Holy Cross Church, 4049 Gordon Head Road, Victoria, BC. Interment following at Hatley Memorial Gardens.
