It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear Mum, Susan Montague, age 62, on September 24th, 2019.
Born in Toronto, Ontario, Mum spent her life caring for others. Her first job was at a summer camp leading kids with disabilities. This sparked her passion supporting those with challenges gain life skills to flourish. After moving to Vancouver Island, Susan worked with the Nanaimo Association of Community Living's Day Program teaching clients about cooking and nutrition. The highlight of her career was teaching the 'Steps to Maturity' Program with the school district where she guided youth through the challenges of puberty.
At 50 she bravely left her career to move off-grid in Northern BC with her partner, and live close to the land. She spent a number of years without electricity, cooking on a pellet stove and soaking in the adventure.
Eventually she settled in the Kootenays and built her dream home in the mountains.
Susan was sensitive, mischievous and patient. She was open-minded, and non-judgmental. She loved to sew and experiment with cooking. Her deep connection with the forest, and wildlife carried on throughout her life and she passed this on to her two daughters. Her girls were everything to her.
'A mother holds her children's hands for a while, and their hearts forever'.
Susan is survived by her daughters, Jennifer Haist (partner Peter), and Lindsey Haist (husband George). Her sister and best friend, Mary. Her adventure partner, Mike, brother Jack (wife Barbara), and nieces and nephews, Spence, Scott and Tracy.
A private service was held in Nanaimo in November. Donations in her memory can be given to the Nanaimo and Area Land Trust, or the Asante Africa Foundation.
