Vera Wenschlag (nee Kalmikoff)

It is with sadness and love that we announce the passing of Vera Wenschlag (nee Kalmikoff) 78 on September 6, 2022.
Vera is predeceased by her Mom and Dad, sister Nellie, brother Donnie, and her beloved Lhasa Apso Sammy.
She is survived by Harvey, her loving husband of 35 years; stepchildren Stuart, Jason, and Jodie; grandchildren Karlie and Jessie; great grandchildren Niko and Victor; sister-in-law Mary; nephews Will (Brenda) and Johnnie.
Vera was born in Nelson to Mary and Mike Kalmikoff on Oct 10, 1943. She spent her childhood with her family in Salmo. Then, when she was old enough, she moved to Nelson to start her career.
In 1968 she joined the RDCK and hit her stride as Deputy Secretary. She was well respected as the RDCK's Chief Elections Officer for many years. After receiving many service awards, she eventually retired from the RDCK after 40 years of service.
Among her many understated gifts, Vera's legendary borscht and pedaheh was a standout. Friends will remember many fun dinner parties at the lake to revel in her delicious cooking. Her gardening skills were enviable and were come by honestly as her Mom, Mary, was a prize-winning gardener.
Vera always kept her mind and hands busy with cooking, reading, and solving crossword puzzles with wizardly skills. After retirement she cherished her yearly trips with her husband to their little paradise condo in Palm Springs.
Vera had a bright spirit and a smile that would light up the room. Her kindness and generous nature were a gift to us all.
In lieu of flowers, please make a big pot of borscht and share it with someone you love.
