October 14, 1926 - October 6, 2018
Winifred Gladys Sokoloski (Winnie) passed away peacefully on October 6, 2018 in Whiterock, B.C. surrounded by family. Mum was born October 14, 1926 in Kaslo, B.C. to George and Dorothy Palmer. She attended Normal School in Victoria where she earned her teaching degree. Her career began in Procter B.C. where she met and married Mike Sokoloski. They raised their large family of 10 children there.
Mum grew an amazing big vegetable garden in Procter and she canned and preserved endlessly to feed us through the winter. She made beautiful hand knit sweaters, toques and scarves for all her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed cross-stitch and embroidery and always keeping busy with one or more projects. Mum enjoyed badminton, bowling, swimming, crossword puzzles and playing crib, scrabble, and board games. She watched Jeopardy and was quick to know the answers. She enjoyed traveling. She was an avid reader and always read to her kids and grandkids all the old fairy stories that she also knew by heart. She was a great storyteller.
Mum had a great memory. She was a great letter writer as well and kept in touch with friends and relatives around the world. She kept up and was very interested in local and world affairs.
Mum would do anything for her kids and grandkids and was always involved in all of their lives. She was very supportive and patient. She had an incredible sense of humour and taught us about hard work, a good work ethic and respect. She was a very kind, generous and forgiving person as well as a determined and strong willed woman. We will miss and love her forever.
She is survived by her 10 children: Georgia Reid (Bob); Janet Postlethwaite (Rod); Fred Sokoloski (Cindy); Cathy Thompson (Carman); Stewart Sokoloski (Kandy); Beverlie Sokoloski; Judy Peel (Brian); Herb Sokoloski; Carolyn Burow (Paul); Eileen O'Neill (Rob) and 20 Grandchildren and 23 Great Grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held on October 14, 2018 at 11:00 am at Avalon Surrey Funeral Home, 13288 - 108 Avenue, Surrey, B.C. V3T 2J6.
