March 31, 1934 - March 27, 2025
In loving memory ~
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Mom, Baba, Great Baba and Aunt, Winnie Niminiken on March 27, 2025. She passed peacefully in her own home, 4 days short of her 91st birthday.
Winnie was born March 31, 1934, in Winlaw, BC to John and Winnie Markin. She grew up on farms within the Slocan Valley with her parents and four sisters.
In early 1950 Winnie followed her eldest sister Laura to Nelson, BC. She then started work at Ramsay's Cameras and continued to work there until she met the love of her life Paul Niminiken.
Winnie and Paul then married May 26, 1956. Once they married, they moved to the farm in South Slocan and lived with Paul's Mom Helen Niminiken where they started their family in 1957. Winnie and Paul had five children Doug, Gary, Ron, Robert and Shelley. They built their dream home on the farm and Winnie continued to live in the home after the passing of her husband Paul in 1979. After the passing of Paul, Winnie then went back to work at Vogue Studios (which happens to be the old Ramsay's Cameras).
She continued to work at Vogue Studios for several years until retirement. Throughout her working career she never missed a day of work.
Winnie, her children and mother-in-law Helen kept the farm going with milking the cows, collecting eggs, churning butter, weeding both the vegetables and flower gardens. Winnie enjoyed preserving the vegetables and fruit she had grown. She was a great cook, everyone loved her delicious borscht, pyrahi, vareniki, walnut chiffon cakes and of course her Sunday pancakes! Winnie was very independent woman, kind, loving, generous and would do anything for anyone at a moments notice. Her family was her world.
Winnie is predeceased by her parents John and Winnie Markin, her husband Paul, her sisters Laura, Polly, Anne and Nancy and granddaughters Melissa and Erin.
Winnie is survived by her 5 children Doug (Linda), Gary (Wendy), Ron, Robert (Cathy), Shelley (Patrick), 11 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
We have lost our beloved Mom, Baba, Great Baba, Aunt and friend who will be dearly missed!
