Always worth celebrating

It’s the backbone of our society. It’s instinctual and all creatures do it, but humans have it nailed down pretty well and it’s what makes us what we are as a species.

It’s the backbone of our society. It’s instinctual and all creatures do it, but humans have it nailed down pretty well and it’s what makes us what we are as a species.

Yet too often we take it for granted. We assume it just happens, but the shaping of our minds is what defines our essence and should never be overlooked.

In today’s Nelson Star we have a special B section called “Celebrating Education in Nelson,” a 12-page spread we’ve filled with stories, pictures and artwork. From news involving the young minds in our schools to lessons taught outside the classroom.

Two of the stories involve exciting spring break trips that will open up new worlds to high school students and potentially set lives on a new path toward success. There’s a story about new buses, because if you can’t get students to school the formal learning blocks sit idle; a practical study about the importance of water at Redfish Elementary; and the story of a spelling whiz from Crawford Bay school.

Of course we’re only scratching the surface of what goes on daily in the corridors of local schools. There are so many stories to tell and as much as we’d like to, we simply can’t do it all.

One of the most interesting parts of this little project was compiling the different pieces of student artwork. From Kindergarten to Grade 12, we had teachers send us in samples and roamed some of the hallways ourselves. What we’ve seen is impressive.

Nelson is well known for its artistic creativity and after the taste we’ve presented in these pages, it’s clear the young are not going to allow us to rest on our laurels.

(The hand drawn ads courtesy Mrs. VanAlstine’s Grade 3/4 class are pretty cool too.)

Health care and education are two issues that spark the most passion in the political arena. Maybe that’s why the average person sometimes tunes it out.

We don’t really need a special section to remind us to celebrate education. We should do it in some small way every day so we never take it for granted. Achievements great and small are happening daily in our schools. We think it’s worth a bigger splash from time to time, so check it out.
