Picture this: a corner lot with a beautiful heritage house. Children ages six and two playing and laughing in the yard, having fun and making memories. Parents in the house, making dinner, doing laundry, looking out on the kids every five minutes to be sure things are good. The kids decide to open the front gate and see what is on the other side. Five steps later they are in the middle of the road, car tires screeching, parents running, all hell breaks loose for those few minutes before everyone finds out what happened.
As responsible parents we have a carabiner latched on our gate to prevent this scenario from happening. Our mail delivery person has decided that his time is too precious to re-latch the carabiner for our children.
He has now refused to deliver are mail at all if we keep using the carabiner on the gate.
He has told us that he only has one hand when delivering the mail because the mail is in the other hand, so it takes too long to open the gate. I must say that keeping the mail in the bag for a few extra steps must be a real inconvenience.
I do not know how someone can justify another’s safety for a few seconds, let alone a young child’s safety.
We also live in a high traffic area with a lot of people walking and drinking on the way to the bars, so relocating our mailbox on the outside of the gate is not an option for us.
I really hope that the extra seconds the delivery personis saving are put to good use.
