Re: Nelson Sports Council opposes Nelson CARES’ housing plan, Feb. 6
Nelson Regional Sports Council (NRSC) states that the proposed design for the 5,500 square-foot recreational portion of the project is too small and insufficient to benefit sports other than solving “a jam up problem with the gym.”
They go on to say later in the article that sports such as badminton, volleyball, basketball and pickleball couldn’t be played because of low ceilings.
If one would only peruse the information provided at the public meeting and online at Nelson CARES it will show in fact the design is for double-high ceilings. Comments related to lighting getting smashed are redundant. Appropriate fixtures I’m sure would address that issue.
NRSC and others keep hammering on the structural studies being carried out on the old Civic Centre and Curling Club buildings and their doomed future. Their statements are speculative at best. I certainly hope and wish for them all to survive and be rejuvenated.
There seems to be a common thread that there is collusion going on with the city and Nelson CARES in the process of re-zoning the said property. Nelson CARES has been transparent. The city and Regional District of Central Kootenay has been following the provincial government’s mandate to develop a Master Plan to address the shortage of affordable housing.
People of Nelson, this is not going to draw unsavoury people from abroad. It’s about providing safe, secure housing for working, or not, citizens of our town who might not be fortunate enough to be able to afford housing prices of today.
