LETTER: Proposed housing is ‘urban blight’

From reader Charles Jeanes...

Nelson CARES is hoping to build this six-storey, 50-unit affordable housing complex in at the corner of Front and Cedar Streets.

The proposed housing on Front Street beside the Nelson and District Community Complex is hideous. The need is not disputed; it’s all too real. But on that site, that size is dead wrong. The ugliness is insupportable. We live in a beautiful place. Why tolerate such urban blight?

Find somewhere for this giant piece of horrible to be that’s less visible – along Government Road or vacant land on the west edges of town, or Rosemont near Hallo’s 24 gentrification townhouses, or across the Nelson Bridge where the motel was converted to a homeless shelter.

When I was an unsuccessful candidate for Nelson council (eight times in the ‘90s and ‘00s) my stance against ugly growth went unappreciated by voters. I warned against directions urban development might go. This Nelson CARES project is precisely what I meant.

Council, citizens, taxpayers – we must say NO to this at the public hearing.
