LETTER: Repaint the Big Pink Bridge

From reader Tim Allen…

I sit in my living room and look at the North Shore bridge, commonly referred to as BOB, the Big Orange Bridge. It originally was silver when first built and was pleasant to view. Several years ago, it was repainted orange for high visibility to aircraft I presume.

Some time ago, it was painted again at great expense, with extreme measures taken to protect our water and environment from contamination. Only the bottom half was painted since the top half was still in acceptable condition. The new paint was a slightly brighter orange, but someone mentioned that they had added a fading factor so that eventually the top and bottom would match.

Well, the paint faded, not to orange, but to a shade of PINK. I will concede it is an orangy pink, but the two halves definitely do not match. I think it looks terrible. If a painting contractor had painted two halves of my house with shades of the same colour that were this badly matched, I would be asking that it be redone at no charge. BOB, once a landmark, is becoming an eyesore.
