This rendering shows the six initial buildings in the golf course housing development at Granite Point. They would house 24 townhouses.

This is a pivotal time for Nelson. The Hallō Properties development at Granite Point Golf Course is before us.

We, who live in Nelson, feel the tangible magic of this valley, in our relationships with the land, waters, forests and all species, including ourselves.

Once we said, “No” to box stores and specific high-rise buildings, fully supporting local businesses and professions, to forge a new direction sustaining the magic. That proved wise.

All life is “intraconnected.” Indigenous people have always known, for every action, there is a ripple throughout the ecological web and bioregion.

So, back to the proposed Hallō property development. Does it support our ecosystem and maintain the magic? Do we have the capacity to support the required infrastructure? Do we understand the long-term impact on local businesses? Have traditional development approaches truly enhanced the magic and sustainment of Banff, Canmore and Whistler?

Our North American economic development model goes all the way back to a 1400’s papal bull called the Doctrine of Discovery. It declared that if new land was discovered, and not occupied by Christians, it was considered empty land. It could be seized, owned, and developed however the “owner” wished.

Indigenous peoples worldwide were dehumanized and dispossessed. Land, water and natural resources became commodities. Connection to land and place was destroyed. Taxation fuelled infrastructure. Private ownership became all powerful.

Do we want to perpetuate this system?

These questions are not to fuel contention. Rather to pause and consider our way of thinking and being. Setting our course requires foresight and wisdom, asking questions that are disruptive and discomforting.

Do we have the curiosity and courage to build a truly sustainable community for our collective future? I believe we do.
