9 medals for Nelson athletes at B.C. Summer Games

Bronson Schmidtke returned with two golds, a silver and bronze

Nelson athletes brought home nine medals from the B.C. Summer Games last month in Prince George

Nelson synchronized swimmers Ashley and Brooke Sonnichsen, who compete for the Nelson Reflections, won the 16-17 gold in duet.

Ashley also took a gold in 16-17 figures followed by Brooke in fourth and their Reflections teammate Jessica Fitchett in sixth. Fitchett also finished fourth overall in 16-17 solo.

Meanwhile, Nelson’s Bronson Schmidtke won four medals.

Schmidtke captured gold in the boys’ 10-13 wakesurf and wakeskate events, a silver in mixed team water sports and a bronze in wakeboard.

In canoe, Marco Garrisi and Kaelum Smith won gold in the male C-2 500-metre learn to train final, while Ayla and Raya Kipkie won bronze in the female C-2 500 learn-to-train event.

Nelson’s Cade McCarthy also took bronze in the mixed super sprint relay.
