The Balfour Golf Course will host its first provincial golf championship when the British Columbia Women’s Amateur and Mid-Amateur comes to the West Kootenays during the week of June 10 to 14.

This will be an exciting time for golf enthusiasts to welcome the finest women amateurs in the province playing for the oldest and most prestigious amateur event in British Columbia.

The tournament was first staged in 1895 at the Victoria Golf Club. Since then many of our country’s finest have captured the championship, including such past LPGA champions as Anna Jane Eathorne, Jennifer Wyatt, Lisa Young, and Dawn Coe Jones.

It has also been the domain of such national and provincial Hall of Famers as Margaret Todd, Marilyn O’Conner, Gail Harvey Moore, and of course Balfour’s own Jackie Little who has captured the Amateur five times, and who the Mid Amateur trophy is affectionately named after!

The defending women’s champion is Chelsea Truong from Vancouver Island, winning last year at Arbutus Ridge with scores of 72-76-77-67. Also, the 2023 Mid-Amateur winner and 2022 United States Senior Women’s amateur champion Shelley Stouffer will be in the field.

Jackie and Pat Little along with local Roma Crispin will act as the tournament committee and enthusiastically invite anyone interested in volunteering to reach us at: holliesgolf@shaw.ca or call 250-918-9170.

It should prove to be an entertaining week when Balfour will finally join the many other provincial courses who have hosted this important event. The tournament committee is looking forward to hearing from you.
