Regional finals are on the way, and the L.V. Rogers senior boys rugby Bombers are riding high.

The Bombers, their junior counterparts and teams from Trail, Rossland, Grand Forks, Kimberley and other communities hit the pitch in Lakeside Park last Friday for the third of four one-day series that make up this year’s league play.

Head coach Michael Joyce says it was another good weekend for the team. The Bombers shut out a J.L. Crowe squad 30-0, then trounced a mixed Grand Forks and Kimberley team by an even higher margin.

“It’s was a blowout,” says Joyce. “I think it was 50 or 40-something to nothing. I didn’t even ask for the ref’s score.”

Though the team started its season with some intense competition in Ireland, and went 2-1 in a closely matched Kamloops tournament, Joyce says league play has once against seen the Bombers dominate the field a little too much.

“It’s been pretty lopsided. We’ve been winning our games, depending on the length of them, anywhere from 70-0 to 30-0,” he says.

“At this point we’re starting to make mistakes based on the fact that we can get away with doing things we shouldn’t be doing because of who we’re playing against.”

However, the Nelson series saw some good play from various members of the team, and Joyce singles out Bomber Quinn Cowie as the day’s standout.

“He played really solid both games,” he explains.

“His physical play was just unmatched by anyone else on the pitch on either side. He was making big hits all day long. He didn’t miss a tackle and every tackle he made was strong.”

The junior Bombers also had a good showing Friday, winning games against Rossland and a younger Grand Forks and Kimberley squad. The juniors are set to head to Cranbrook next week to finish up their season, while the senior team is still setting a venue for its league final against Trail.

Joyce says the Bombers are once against projected to take the top spot in the league and the team’s focus is already on provincials, where they hope to improve on 2010’s last place showing.

A Kootenay berth was added to the AA Championships last year for the first time in more than a decade.
