Mother Nature was the ultimate victor at Queen Elizabeth Park this past weekend, but the L.V. Rogers Bombers did manage to pick up their first two wins of the season.

The high school hosted a four-team tournament that opened Friday afternoon at the local diamond.

After countless hours of hard work in battle with the horrible spring conditions, Bomber coach Ron Mace and his crew had the Fairview diamond looking almost perfect for the opening pitch.

LVR’s first opponent Friday was the Castlegar Babe Ruth team. Cole Laughton came out strong on the mound and ended up going the distance to record the Bombers’ first win of the season in five tries.

The offensive highlight of the game arrived late when Grade 12 slugger Curtis Pereverzoff came to the plate with the bases loaded.

Pereverzoff waited for his pitch and then launched a drive over the bank and onto the road for a grand slam. Pereverzoff went 3-for-4, adding two doubles to his impressive game at the dish.

In the Bombers’ second game of the evening, Adam Wheeldon struck out seven batters in a complete game against Kimberley pacing his team to a 15-4 victory.

Wheeldon also led the hitting parade with three doubles on the night. Grade 8 standout Nolan Renwick chipped in going 2-for-3.

On Saturday morning the tournament managed to get two games off involving Grand Forks, Castlegar and Kimberley, but the relentless rain forced the afternoon contests to be cancelled.
