With just seven games left in the regular season, the Castlegar Rebels have parted ways with head coach Nick Headrick.
After playing for the Rebels for two seasons and working as the assistant coach, Headrick had been leading the team since November 2022 when he replaced Arnie Caplan.
In a Jan. 31 announcement, the Castlegar Rebels Executive Board said, "We want to thank Nick for his dedication and hard work over the past six seasons and wish him all the best in his future endeavours.
"This was a difficult decision, but we believe it is in the best interest of the team moving forward."
The board said they were "committed to finding a head coach who can continue to nurture and expand our program, ensuring sustained progress and achievement."
The next day they announced that Alex Evin would serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the 2024/25 hockey season.
The board said Evin's "extensive experience and abilities make him the ideal candidate to lead our team in pursuit of our objectives for the remainder of the season."
Evin was raised in Castlegar and played in the BCHL and collegiate hockey. He most recently was the head coach for the Prince George Spruce Kings and has been part of the coaching staff of the Alberni Valley Bulldogs and the Selkirk Saints.
"I am happy to join the team for the remainder of the season and help the Rebels organization finish strong both on and off the ice," said Evin.
The Rebels are sitting fourth (out of five teams) in the Neil Murdoch Division of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League with a record of 13 wins and 24 losses. However, they have managed to secure a spot in the division playofffs.
The Rebels next home game is Friday, Feb. 7.
