Eight West Kootenay speedskaters carve the ice at Coyote Cup

The event was a tuneup for two athletes prior to the B.C. Winter Games

Three athletes with the West Kootenay Speedskating Club finished first in their events at the Coyote Cup short-track competition in Kamloops on Saturday.

Berand Platje was first in Divison One’s Group 1C while Mercedes Phillips finished atop Division One’s Group 1G as both skaters prepare to represent the Kootenay Zone at the upcoming B.C. Winter Games, which run Feb. 22 to 25 in Kamloops.

Tristan Phillips meanwhile took first in Division Three’s Group 3B.

Eight skaters made the trip with the club to compete against teams from Williams Lake, Prince George, Richmond, Kelowna, Vernon, Salmon Arm and two from Kamloops.

Other results included: Ian Walgren finishing fifth in Division One Group 1G prior to his trip to Port Coquitlam for a Special Olympics meet Feb. 3 to 4; Luke Platje was fourth in Division Three Group 3A; Oliver Ludwar placed second in Division Three Group 3C; June Platje took second in Division Four Group 4B and Charlie Ludwar stepped onto the podium with a third-place result in Division Four Group 4D.

All skaters also posted multiple personal bests at the event.

Next up is the final meet of the season in Vernon on Feb. 10.
