The Kootenay Bombers volleyball team placed second in their division in the tier 1 final at the 18U Youth Nationals in Calgary on May 20. The Condors from Québec defeated the Bombers in three games 25-23, 20-25 and 15-11 in the gold medal final.

The Kootenay team, made up of seven Grade twelves and four Grade elevens from Nelson and the Slocan Valley, went undefeated in the round robin finishing first in the pool play. They defeated DCV Smash from Alberta (22-25, 25-11 and 15-8), Southwest Central Wildfire from Alberta (25-23, 25-15) and CBC Falcons from Newfoundland (25-12, 25-14) on the opening day.

The next day, teams were put into six power pools where the Bombers went undefeated against the Loopers from Newfoundland (25-7, 25-22) Black Gold from Alberta ( 25-9, 25-17) and then Central Valley Chaos from Saskatchewan (25-15, 25-17) placing first once again which earned them a bye to the tier 1 semi- finals on Saturday.

They met up with DCV Smash at the Olympic Oval in the semis final. The Bombers didn’t play their best first game due to nerves and many unforced errors but managed to squeak out the win with scores of 21-25, 25-22 and 15-9 to make it to the tier 1 finals in their division.
