Kootenay Ice show late season promise

As the BC Major Midget season winds down, the local Kootenay Ice have hit their stride.

As the BC Major Midget season winds down, the local Kootenay Ice have hit their stride.

In a pair of weekend games in Castlegar against one of the top teams in the league, the Ice scored three of a possible four points.

Taking on the second place Valley West Hawks, few would have predicted the tenth place Ice had much of chance. Somebody forgot to text the Ice as they beat their visitors 4-3 on Saturday night and tied them 3-3 on Sunday morning.

On Saturday Derek Georgopoulos and Jacob Boyczuk set the pace with two goals in the first to establish a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.

The Hawks came back to tie, but Jake Lucchini and Derek Medeiros added two in the third to seal the win.

On Sunday, Christian Pickles was solid in net and goals from Lucchini, Georgopoulos and Nelson’s Carsen Willians helped earn the tie.
