Local martial artists got a rare opportunity to be taught by a grandmaster last week.

Brenda Sell, a grandmaster in taekwondo, was on hand to help judge Kootenay Martial Arts during its students’ black belt testing Sept. 28. Earlier this year the American attained her ninth degree black belt, and she is currently the second ranked taekwondo expert in the world.

Fifteen students passed their exams. They include:

First degree: eight-year-old Jeremiah Richichi, Braden Postnikoff (11), Oliver Marsh (13), Orin Talbot (13), Grant Day (14), Siddhartha Minhas (14), Josie Day and Ulysse Homier and Deana Postnikoff.

Second degree: Devon Kohler (11), Liam Smith (16), Andrea Kohler, Shana Kavaloff, Marilou Smith, Vlodko Barchuk.
