Leafs, Border Bruins split first two games of series

The Nelson Leafs and Grand Forks Border Bruins split the first two games of the KIJHL playoffs over the weekend.

The series opened Friday in Grand Forks, where the Border Bruins rallied from a 3-1 deficit to beat the Leafs 4-3 in overtime.

Levi Astill scored in OT and added one more in regulation for Grand Forks, while JP Desabrais and Nate Tillmans also scored. All three regulation goals for the Border Bruins were on the power play. Goaltender Ethan Shebansky meanwhile finished with 31 saves.

Karl Soneff stopped 57 shots in net for the Leafs. Crae Dawson scored and missed on a penalty shot in the second period. Parker White also scored and Kieran Christianson added a short-handed goal.

Nelson rebounded Saturday thanks to another strong performance from Soneff, who stopped 39 shots in a 1-0 win.

Leighton Partington broke the deadline midway through the third period for the Leafs.

Shebansky meanwhile made 30 saves.

Nelson hosts Game 3 on Monday and Game 4 on Tuesday.
