The L.V. Rogers junior girls basketball team celebrates their West Kootenay victory.

The L.V. Rogers junior girls basketball Bombers peaked at the right time last week and returned home from Trail with a West Kootenay championship.

Ranked third heading into the season-ending playoff weekend, the Bombers opened with a 42-19 win over Castlegar’s Stanley Humphries. Jayden Roch lead the club in scoring with 12 points.

In the semi-finals the L.V. girls were matched up against a tough Rossland Royals team.

“This was the team to beat in the tournament,” says Bombers coach Val Gibson.

With Lynnea Carr leading the charge with 16 points and Devyn Parker adding nine, the Bombers took an intense contest 38-31 to send them to the final against the Grand Forks Wolves.

Fired up and using the Lorne Wuori zone press, the Bombers marched to a 23-7 lead by the half.

The Wolves fought back to make it a game, but the Bombers held on to claim the 31-23 win and West Kootenay bragging rights. The final featured a balanced attack lead by Parker and Carr (eight points each), Roch (six) and Kyley Mirva (five).

The LVR junior boys squad plays for the West Kootenay title this coming weekend.

Both senior LVR teams missed the opportunity to head to provincials last weekend. For more on that story check out Friday’s Star.
