Nelson boxer Wamuna Fukada wins gold at provincials

Fukada scored a unanimous decision in North Vancouver

Nelson’s Wamuna Fukada won gold at the B.C. boxing provincials last weekend in North Vancouver after scoring a unanimous decision.

Fukada, competing in the Youth Novice 57-kilogram division, pushed the pace and cut off the ring to seal a win against Jiang Tang of Surrey’s Bisla Boxing.

Riel Martinez, also fighting for the Nelson Boxing Club, was unopposed in the Junior C Open 75kg division.

Two other Nelson boxers also fought at the event.

Djavan Mayer moved up to the open division and came up short against North Vancouver’s Ali Beig in a hard-fought decision. Porter Hanson, meanwhile, settled for silver in a Junior B 60kg fight against Csongar Basco from Rebels Boxing in Coquitlam.

It was the first provincials tournament since 2019 and featured a record 120 athletes and 81 fights from 23 different boxing clubs over three days of competition.

Martinez and Mayer will next represent B.C. at the Western Canadian Championships, which take place at Calgary in May.
