Nelson boxer Lola Brouillette took silver at the AMBC Elite, Youth and Junior American Boxing Championship in Cali, Colombia.
Brouillette, who was chosen to compete as part of a team with Boxing Canada, was edged by Mexico’s Alondra Yeraldi Sanchez Rodriguez in the youth women 50-52 kilogram fly final on Aug. 8.
It was the 17-year-old’s debut with Team Canada, and the first time a Nelson boxer has been selected to the national squad. She had a bye to the final before facing Rodriguez.
Nelson Boxing Club owner Jesse Pineiro, who also made his Team Canada debut as one of three coaches on the trip, said Brouillette should be lauded for her performance.
“Lola lost to a five-time Mexican national champion and someone who went to world championships in Spain last year, and she barely lost,” said Pineiro.
“She could have won it, and she will win it next time with more experience. That’s all we were missing. I’m happy with it, I’m happy with her performance.”
Brouillette and Pineiro next rejoin Team B.C. for a trip to Dungarvan, Ireland for the Celtic Box Cup, which features boxers from across Europe.
