Nelson boxers Fukada, Martinez win medals at Calgary Cup

Two Nelson boxers took home medals from the Calgary Cup.

Nelson Boxing Club fighters Wamuna Fukada and Riel Martinez joined 29 other boxers with Team B.C. for the May 13 to 15 event, which included more than 150 athletes from seven provinces.

Fukada, 17, won gold in the 57-kilogram youth division. He landed a left hook to the body of Nova Scotia’s Noah Thompson, 17, in the first round en route to winning won of B.C.’s eight golds.

Martinez, 16, moved up to the youth 71 kg division for the first time. He took silver after losing a close decision to Quebec’s Vincent Santoriello, 17.

The Nelson Boxing Club will host Fight Night 9 on May 28. The card begins at 6 p.m. at the Nelson Rod and Gun Club.

Tickets are $30 and can be purchased at the boxing club, located at 685B Baker St.
