Nelson’s Wamuna Fukada won a split-decision at a card in Portland as part of Team B.C. on Oct. 9-10.

Fukada, 18, used pressure and angles beat Jermaine Carrillo of Tacoma, Wash., who entered the fight with 70 career bouts to Fukada’s 12.

Three other Nelson boxers also took part in the tournament as part of the 30-boxer provincial team.

Nelson’s Marino Raffo, 14, won a unanimous decision against Santiago Pardo of Sacramento, Calif., while Lola Brouillette, 17, lost a close decision to Tacoma’s Kalolaine Tuifua.

Riel Martinez, 17, won a slugfest against Marco Perez of Pendleton, Ore. Martinez was bleeding from the note after the second round but used quick angles and inside pressure to ear the win.

The tournament was one of the biggest of the year with more than 300 athletes competing from B.C., Alberta, Washington, Oregon, California and Hawaii.

The Nelson Boxing Club’s next hometown boxing card will be Oct. 29 at the Nelson Rod and Gun Club. Tickets are available in advance at the gym, located at 685B Baker St., for $25 or at the door for $30.
