Nelson Leafs snap losing streak to end 2022

The Leafs earned wins against Castlegar and Beaver Valley

The Nelson Leafs snapped their seven-game losing streak with a pair of post-Christmas wins.

Dawson Davis scored the shootout winner as the Leafs edged the Castlegar Rebels 5-4 at home on Dec. 30.

Ryan Quast scored twice for the Leafs, while Bennett Anklewich and Lucas Byrne added singles and goaltender Jasper Tait made 22 saves.

The Rebels (7-21-3) forced overtime with two third-period goals from Tymon Sanikopoulos and Daytn Kulynych. Austin Lourenco and Jace Kramer also scored in the first period. Goaltender Matteo Hueston finished with 33 saves.

One day later, the Leafs beat the Beaver Valley Nitehawks 3-1 in a game that featured 336 penalty minutes with several on-ice fights.

Joe Davidson, Tyson Lautard and Davis each scored for the Leafs, with Frederick Larochelle stopping just 15 shots for the win.

Connor Stojan was forced to make 34 saves in net for the Nitehawks (16-11-2), whose lone goal came from Tyson Tokarz in the second period.

The wins moved the Leafs (16-8-5) one point behind the Neil Murdoch Division-leading Grand Forks Border Bruins.

Nelson next hits the road for a three-games-in-three-days trip through Chase, 100 Mile House and Kamloops starting Friday. The Leafs then visit Grand Forks on Jan. 13 before finally returning home against Castlegar on Jan. 14.
