Nelson Leafs to play Nitehawks in first round of playoffs

Nelson secured 2nd place with a 6-3 win over Beaver Valley

The Nelson Leafs will face Beaver Valley in the first round of the KIJHL playoffs after beating the Nitehawks in Fruitvale 6-3 on Saturday.

Frederick Larochelle made 43 saves and Kieran Christianson scored twice for Nelson (24-15-5), while Leighton Partington, Tyson Lautard, Johnny Carmichael and Lucas Byrne added singles.

Nathan Presley turned aside 39 shots for the Nitehawks (24-17-3), with Ollie Clement, Ethan Smyth and Spencer Dixon-Reusz scoring one apiece.

The win clinched second place and home-ice advantage for the Leafs in the regular-season finale. Nelson finished tied atop the Neil Murdoch Division with Grand Forks, but the Border Bruins had one extra win to capture their first division title in 30 years.

Nelson hosts Games 1 and 2 on Friday and Saturday. The series turns to Fruitvale for Game on Feb. 21 and Game 4 on Feb. 22. If necessary, Game 5 would be Feb. 24 in Nelson, Game 6 in Fruitvale on Feb. 25 and a Game 7 in Nelson on Feb. 27.
