After most of the 2020-2021 competitive season was cancelled due to COVID-19, the Nelson Skating Club finally had the opportunity to attend a competition, with spectators in Castlegar over the weekend of Dec. 10-12.

Coaches Sarah Gower and Jordyn Eberts jointly launched the Nelson skaters, who were thrilled to be performing in front of a live audience again.

Highlights included Oceane Cheon winning the bronze medal in the STAR 4 U13 category at her first live competition, and Aili Brackett winning the silver medal in the Juvenile category. Aili was also presented with a $50 bursary from Kootenay Region for representing Kootenay Region at the recent BC/YK Sectional Championships in Parksville.

Nelson Skating Club also had adult figure skaters competing in Gold Free Skate and Adult Open Interpretive. Jen McNutt earned the bronze medal in Gold Free Skate, and the gold medal in the Adult Open Interpretive. Nikita Bouwmeester performed in her first competition since she was a teenager, and had a joyous response to performing her intense artistic program to “Never Tear Us Apart” and winning the silver medal.
