Nelson speed skaters shine in Vernon

The Nelson Speed Skating Club had a tremendous performance in Vernon this past weekend.

Fifteen athletes made the journey to the Okanagan and competed against skaters from seven other clubs: Vernon, Kelowna, two teams from Kamloops, Shuswap, Matsqui, and Ridge Meadows.

Nelson had the most skaters in attendance of any club. This inter-club meet in Vernon is one of the best in the area and the Nelson skaters always seem to skate well there.

A total of 12 medals were collected by the 15 skaters (five gold, three silver, four bronze), with all of the skaters posting personal best times during the various distances. Medals were handed out by age class.

The medals are a nice touch to a really fast-paced weekend, but it is the drive to get personal best times for all the distances that really pushes the skaters to train harder.

Even coach Jason Hartleb took part in the relay event at the end of the day as the anchor for the eight and under squad.

The season is winding down anyone is welcome to come out and try speed skating. The club meets Mondays 5 to 7 p.m. and Thursdays 5:15 to 7 p.m.
